Water temperatures have ranged from 65-69 degrees during the daytime. Shad are spawning so the striper bite has been in shallow water about until the sun hits the water and the shad move out. This has made for a good, shallow top-water bite first thing in the morning. This is the early part of the top-water bite.

Most fish are shallow around the tules or on structure. Senkos, plastics, jigs and worms (dropshots) have been effective in as deep as 18 feet of water. Bait-fishing has been fair as well.

Stripers should be spawning soon. The anchovy bite for stripers at times has been good around the main channel drop-offs.

The bass spawn is still going on for smallmouth bass, but the largemouth spawn hasn't quite hit, yet. Cooler air temperatures recently have delayed that spawn. When water temperatures were above 70, during the third week of March, there was a good top-water frog bite. Redear sunfish are not hitting much in the main lakes, but 1- to 1.5-pound redear have been caught in the northern bays and in the river areas.

The catfish bite has been good. No monsters lately, but anglers have had luck with cut mackerel and sardines.
