Bear Canyon Lake - Payson, AZ

Fish Spot Details

Bear Canyon Lake is a remote, 60-acre trout lake located at 7,500 feet on the Mogollon Rim northeast of Payson. The lake is regularly stocked from spring through fall with rainbow trout, and fishing is most productive during the cooler months. Anglers commonly use PowerBait, worms, and small spinners. Fly anglers also do well with dry flies and nymphs near the inlet and drop-offs. Wading is permitted, and float tubes provide deeper access. Trout range from 10 to 14 inches, with larger fish caught occasionally. The lake is not directly accessible by car—visitors must hike about a quarter mile from the parking area. This helps maintain the area’s serenity and discourages overcrowding. Bear Canyon Lake is a day-use only facility with no camping or restrooms, so anglers should come prepared. Its combination of reliable trout fishing, striking scenery, and light pressure make it a standout destination for those willing to make a short hike into the wilderness.
