The Metolius River continues to fish really with steady flows and excellent water clarity. The warmer weather over the last week has continued increasing bug activity throughout the system.
PMDs are now the primary afternoon hatch and caddis activity has continued to improve during the evenings. Fish are spending more time looking up during the better hatch windows, while BWOs are still showing up during cooler mornings.
Nymphing remains a productive day-to-day approach. Golden stones, caddis pupa, perdigons, jigged mayfly patterns, hare’s ears, and smaller attractor nymphs are all solid options. Pocket water, seams, and softer edges continue to be the most productive places to focus your efforts.
Dry fly opportunities continue to improve as hatch windows get longer and more predictable. PMDs, caddis, and occasional March Browns are all bringing fish to the surface throughout the day. Bull trout fishing has also remained solid for anglers putting time in around deeper structure with streamers and larger sculpin patterns.
The Metolius is fishing exactly how it should this time of year—good bugs, active fish, and improving dry fly opportunities as we move deeper into June.
Suggested Dries:
March Brown #12-14, Purple Haze #16-20, PMD Sparkle Dun #16-18, Elk Hair Caddis #14-18, Parachute Adams #16-20, CDC PMD Emerger #16-18
