Lake Amador, just outside Ione in the Sierra foothills, is a go-to spot for anglers looking for an easy getaway with great fishing. Known for its awesome trout stocking program, the lake gets loaded with fish like Donaldson Rainbows, Amador Golds, Cutbows, and Lightning Trout—many of them in the 3-pound range. Stockings happen regularly, especially during the cooler months, so your odds of landing something decent are pretty good.

People have luck using everything from PowerBait and nightcrawlers to lures like Panther Martins, Kastmasters, and Rooster Tails. If you're into trolling, try Speedy Shiners or Rapalas around 5 to 20 feet deep—especially near the dam or Jackson Creek arm.

Trout aren’t the only thing biting here. Lake Amador also has largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, and even the occasional brown trout. The water usually sits around 65°F, making it a great all-around fishery.

The lake’s got good amenities too—boat rentals, a launch ramp, and plenty of camping spots. Whether you’re casting from shore or cruising in a boat, it’s an easy, relaxing place to spend the day (or the weekend) fishing with friends or family. Just don’t forget your sunscreen and a cooler for your catch!
