Cowlitz River

Fish Spot Details

Fish Species: Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Cutthroat Trout, Steelhead, Rainbow Trout
The Cowlitz River, a significant Columbia River tributary in Southwest Washington, is one of the state's most popular and consistently productive angling destinations. It provides exceptional year-round Steelhead fishing, with strong runs of both Winter and Summer Steelhead, peaking during their respective seasons. Anglers effectively pursue these powerful fish by drift fishing, float fishing, or fly casting, particularly in the highly productive Blue Creek to Barrier Dam stretch, which benefits from hatchery releases.

Salmon fishing is equally prominent, featuring prized Spring Chinook from April to June, robust Fall Chinook from August to October, and aggressive Coho from November to December. These anadromous species are targeted with various conventional methods like drift fishing with roe or back-trolling plugs. Resident Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout offer additional opportunities. Access is excellent, with numerous public boat launches and bank access points.

Given its importance and popularity, closely monitoring the latest Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations and emergency updates is crucial for compliance, especially regarding gear, bag limits, and rules for hatchery versus wild fish, ensuring the sustainable enjoyment of this invaluable fishery.
