Nelson Reservoir, located near Alpine in Arizona’s White Mountains, is a well-managed, high-elevation trout fishery at 7,400 feet. This 60-acre lake is stocked regularly with rainbow trout and occasionally with native Apache trout, making it a prime destination for anglers seeking both consistent action and the chance to catch a rare species.

Rainbow trout are easily caught from shore or by boat using bait like PowerBait and worms, or lures such as spinners. Fly fishing is productive with nymphs and dry flies, especially in the early morning. Apache trout, though more selective, can be taken on natural presentations and are a highlight for conservation-minded anglers.

Nelson is ideal for small boats, float tubes, and kayaks—gas motors are prohibited, preserving the peaceful nature of the lake. A boat ramp, restrooms, and ample shoreline access make it user-friendly. The best fishing season runs from April through October, with peak conditions in spring and fall.

The lake sits in the heart of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and offers scenic surroundings, abundant wildlife, and a cool escape from the summer heat. Anglers should check current AZGFD regulations, particularly regarding Apache trout conservation.

Nelson Reservoir remains one of the most dependable alpine trout fisheries in Arizona.
