Covering about 50 acres, it’s stocked frequently with rainbow trout and occasionally with Apache trout, providing a scenic and productive fishery throughout the warmer months.
Rainbow trout are easily caught on PowerBait, worms, and spinners. Fly anglers have success with beadhead nymphs, woolly buggers, and dry flies, especially during summer hatches. Apache trout are a special treat here—when present, they add a conservation aspect to the experience, and anglers are encouraged to handle them with care.
The lake allows boats with electric or small gas motors (10 hp or less), and a launch ramp is available. Shoreline access is good in most places, although reeds can limit casting in certain spots. Float tubes and kayaks are ideal for working quiet pockets and deeper channels.
Surrounded by the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, River Reservoir is a tranquil location rich with wildlife and alpine beauty. Fishing is best from May to October, and access may be limited by snow during the winter months.
Statewide trout regulations apply, with a six-fish daily limit. River Reservoir is a top choice for Arizona anglers seeking a peaceful and productive mountain trout fishing experience.
