Colorado River - Lees Ferry

Fish Spot Details

The Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam—known as Lees Ferry—is one of Arizona’s most iconic and productive trout fisheries. This tailwater section flows cold and clear year-round, providing consistent conditions ideal for wild rainbow trout. Stretching approximately 15 miles downstream from the base of Lake Powell, the river supports trout populations that thrive due to the cold-water releases from the dam. With water temperatures ranging between 47–52°F year-round, Lees Ferry offers stable hatches and exceptional trout habitat. Fly fishing dominates the fishery. Anglers employ nymph rigs with zebra midges, San Juan worms, and scuds. Dry fly fishing occurs during seasonal midge and caddis hatches, with terrestrial action during warmer months. Trout average 14–18 inches, with fish over 20 inches caught regularly. Access is best by boat. Jet boats and inflatables transport anglers to remote bars like 4-Mile and Horseshoe Bend. Wading is possible near the launch ramp and in back eddies. Facilities at Lees Ferry include a boat ramp, campground, and restrooms. Barbless hook regulations and slot limits help maintain fish quality and survival. As both a world-class trout stream and gateway to Grand Canyon boating trips, Lees Ferry attracts anglers nationwide. Its blend of accessibility, fish quality, and scenery make it one of the Southwest’s premier coldwater fisheries.
Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
