Chevelon Canyon Lake - Heber, AZ

Chevelon Canyon Lake, located in Arizona’s rugged Rim Country northeast of Heber, is a 200-acre reservoir managed as a wild trout fishery, notable for its solitude, challenging terrain, and excellent fishing for naturally reproducing brown and rainbow trout. Unlike many other Arizona lakes, Chevelon is not stocked; instead, it supports a self-sustaining trout population. The lake is accessed only via a steep 3/4-mile trail from Forest Road 169, requiring anglers to hike in with gear. This limited access makes Chevelon ideal for experienced anglers seeking a remote and rewarding fishing environment. Most anglers target brown trout, which can reach sizes over 18 inches. Rainbow trout are also present and offer active surface feeding during cooler months. Fly anglers do best with woolly buggers, leeches, and streamers, while spinning gear anglers find success with Panther Martins and small spoons. Fishing is best in spring and fall, especially during early mornings or late evenings when trout cruise the shallows. There are no developed facilities or boat ramps, and float tubes must be packed in manually. Primitive camping is permitted near the trailhead.
