The trout are still sitting quite shallow due to water temps hovering in the mid to high 30s. This makes them very accessible from the shore for anglers fishing all kinds of techniques.
The most consistent way to get results is still a Carolina rig with a floating bait such as inflated nightcrawlers, micetails, or Zeke's Sierra Gold mixed with some Powerbait. Keep the leader around a foot long, and make a shorter cast than you're comfortable with.
Bait is not the only way to get bit, though. Lures and flies are getting the job done, too. Small spoons and spinners slow-rolled along the bottom can be very effective.
Mini jigs are another good choice. Let them spiral down to the bottom then twitch them back up toward the top and repeat.
And don't forget to bring the fly rod with you! Midge patterns and/or balanced leeches are the best fly choices. Hang them under an indicator (or a half full water bobber if you are on spinning gear) so that they're dancing just above the bottom.
Regardless of your chosen technique, you'll want to post up along the north shore anywhere east of the observatory for your best chance at hooking one or two of these beefy winter rainbows.
